How it works

The Process

1. Raw 3-D graphic data of almost any kind- including: LIDAR, Aerial photographs, CAD, CAM, can be used to make a hologram.

2. The model data is processed and rendered by our proprietary rendering engine. Each digital hologram is composed of thousands of hogels (like a three dimensional pixel). The model data is broken down into subsets for each hogel.

3. A hologram of a 3-D model is formed by recording the interference pattern of two laser beams. One laser beam is encoded with the datausing an LCD screen which then scatters the image onto the recording medium. The second beam serves as a reference beam. The two beams are brought together and interfere on the recording medium (a photo polymer film). Each point in the object acts as a point source of light, and each of these point sources interferes with the reference beam, giving rise to an interference pattern. The interference pattern of light and dark areas, similar to zebra stripes, is recorded in the photo polymer. This process is repeated for each hogel to build the entire hologram.

4. After recording and processing the film, the hologram is illuminated by a light in a similar position to the reference beam it was recorded with. Each hogel’s recorded interference pattern will diffract part of the reference beam to re-construct the data beam. These individual reconstructed data beams add together to reconstruct the whole 3-D model. The viewer perceives a 3-D image reconstructed in reflected light which is identical to the 3-D model data.

The Motion Project was a collaboration between a lot of clever creative people working together to create a machine that turns motion into music. The project came from Colenso BBDO, the agency for V energy drink. Producer Joel Little (Kids of 88, Goodnight Nurse) created the music, musician/tech wiz James Hayday broke the track down and wrestled it into Ableton, and Paul Sanderson of Fugitive built the tech to control the music with the help of Mike Delucci. I also helped with the music side of the tech and built the visuals software with motion graphics warlocks Matt von Trott and Jonny Kofoed of Assembly. Assembly also produced and directed the music video. Hip-hop/tap dancer Josh Cesan was the ‘Motion Artist’ tasked with playing the machine and Zoe Macintosh of Thick As Thieves documented the process. Heaps of other people were involved along the way. It was a true collaboration, with everyone contributing ideas and energy to the process. Copy by Custom-logic

I like how they instead of having a flat screen, made this interesting “coral” like pattern with the screens.

“Buzios’ Coral Reef Park Visitor Center – Interactive screens, synchronized projections and corals on display are part of the interactive andarchitectural design project created by SuperUber for the Buzios’ Coral Reef Park Visitor Center, located in one of the most popular spots in the city: Rua das Pedras. The exhibition’s visual concept creates an immersive environment with shapes inspired by coral patterns, which together form a mosaic of images, made of videos, animations, corals and information, with themes such as preservation, oceanography and environmental education. Original ambient sound for the projections composed by Lucas Marcier.” Text from site

One of my new fave company’s out there to look out for I must say is SuperUber. They have some fun ideas and visuals.

Here is the Minas Gerais – Vale Memorial they did in Belo Horizonte November 2010.

“The Minas Gerais – Vale Memorial concept, in Belo Horizonte, presents the state’s history using multimedia and interactive resources. The building opened in november 2010 and was restored according to Gringo Cardia’s project. The Memorial’s technology director is Russ Rive – CEO and CTO of SuperUber – responsible for the research and technology strategy that made possible the Museum’s original interactions. The Memorial is part of the Liberdade Square Cultural Circuit, project that counts with 10 different cultural centers and offers knowledge, art, science and entertainment to people. Two examples of museums in the Circuit are the Mines and Metal Museum and the TIM UFMG Knowledge Center, both having SuperUber’s works. The interactive project of the Memorial has a sophisticated technology set up for a large museum, with over 30 rooms. The innovative interfaces are specially made for the text, videos, animations and sounds of the Museum. The project also includes some interfaces where people can access content through iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Here are a few featured installations:

Modernism Room – a large projected multitouch table, about modernism in Minas Gerais, Brazil and the world.

Rock art room – electronic sensors and interactive animations show the ancient rock art drawings in movement.

Minas Gerais Farm room – projection mapping with images made by Minas Gerais artist Humberto Mauro, projected onto typical objects from a farm.” copy from site
